Same Set Syndrome Hop with Kat Scrappiness!

Welcome to the #SeptemberSameSetSyndrome hop! This month we are showcasing Kat Scrappiness, who is not only a stamp and die designer in their own right, but also a phenomenal store where you can purchase products from many companies in addition to their Kat Scrappiness exclusives. And wait until you see their embellishment selection! Wowzers! We’re all using the same set, called Christmas Gnomes and as you can see I felt inspired and made 3 cards for you today!!! All the images were colored with Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol, and Spectrum Noir sparkle pen was added to all the white fuzzy parts of the outfits.

First up is this slimline card using not just the Christmas Gnomes, but also the Double Stitched Nesting Slimline Dies by Kat Scrappiness. I used the largest die to create the frame and layered the negative piece inside as a background. I added acetate to the frame, used Darice thin foam strips to pop the front up and added these cool Confetti Tubes from the Dollar Tree! They’re lightweight, squishy, and springy… and they get Everywhere… but they look so cool in real life that its worth it! I dressed up the shaker with some paper strips to mimic a present. The focal and sentiment are both popped up on top for dimension. Here is a closeup of all that shimmer of the confetti tubes, sequins, and sparkle pen:

Next up is the candy cane gnome:

This one was inspired by the current sketch at Inspire.Create.Challenge (not to be confused with last month’s spotlight Create and Inkspire). I found the perfect candy cane paper in my stash from Doodlebug but a whole cardfront was too busy. Sketch to the rescue, I found this simple sketch (below) and with the benefit of double sided papers I was good to go! I wanted a little differentiation between the patterns so I added a strip of silver mirror cardstock to mirror the silver buckle on this gnomies outfit. The rounded rectangle dies are from Pink and Main. Here is candy cane gnomies closeup:

Last up is Christmas lights gnomie:

These dudes were too cute not to use them ALL! This background is a 6×6 cling stamp from Hero Arts and its aptly called Christmas Lights. It too is colored with Prismacolors and Gamsol. The circle dies are a combination of Simon Says Stamp and Spellbinders (gotta use what you have sometimes). So much fun to color!!! And here is this dude’s glamour shot:

All three cards have spectrum noir sparkle pen accents (super hard to photograph), red sequins as embellishments, and silver gel pen details. I was tempted to add Nuvo Glaze to all the Christmas lights but then I came to my senses!!! LOL

Collected Crafty Collabs September Hop!

I’m always so excited to bring this post to you each month! This is my favorite project to work on because it not only makes me use all the goodies I’ve squirreled away but I get to share with you some of the best crafters you will ever find but may never of heard of before! Our little hop group has SO much talent! And its always fun to see their takes on the monthly prompts. If you haven’t been here before, welcome to my little home on the internet! If you arrived here from Martha Lucia Gomez of Joy Clair fame, than you have already seen some of the goodness this hop produces! After me, your next stop is the spectacular and talented Danielle Brown, who designs for Joy Clair and Dare 2B Artzy! You don’t want to miss out on her post!!! I’ll link to her again at the end too for your convenience, as well as the full hop schedule. This month the prompt is Halloween/Fall cards and/or Sequins. So many possibilities! Let’s get to it!

It wouldn’t be a Collected Crafty Collabs hop if I didn’t include a squirrel image (or two)! I started with this adorable squirrel from Gerda Steiner’s Happy Fall and colored him with Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol. For the background, I used an assortment of Distress Oxides and ink blended on bristol paper. I wanted to die cut leaves, and glue them on the card base in the same place they were cut from the ink blended panel so I made a template with copy paper to help me. It would take longer to type out the steps than it did to do it and I know y’all have probably done this yourselves so we’ll skip the details (if questions, pop them in the comments!). I then *painstakingly* glued color coordinating sequins to the die cuts and adhered the negative ink blended piece over top with with foam tape. I die cut a larger leaf out of vellum to ground my little squirrel, added a sentiment strip, popped it up on the front and this card was complete! Here is a closer look:

This process gave me another idea, so the overachiever in me whipped up another card! Same, but different!

This time I simplified the process by making it a shaker card. I randomly ink blended a bristol card panel, this time with another assortment of Oxides. Again I die cut a bunch of the leaf dies but this time we’re not using them for the background. Instead, I ink blended a lighter color on the card front to shine through the apertures. I added acetate and foam tape to the front panel, making small wells for each die cut leaf. I added a ton of sequins and microbeads to each well and then lined up my ink blended card base and pressed to secure all those shiny goodies within! I used sentiments from Neat & Tangled’s Into the Woods (which sadly does not have a squirrel image) and (bravely) stamped directly on the ink blended piece. Had I not forgotten to stamp the sentiment until it was assembled, I would have heat embossed the sentiment. Here is another view of the card:

And because I can’t help myself (and I have more squirrel sets than we have months in the hops) I have a 3rd card for you!

Sweet, right? This uses a scene stamp from Darcie’s called Autumn Scene and a sweet squirrel from the Hello Bluebird Woodland Littles set. I could have masked the squirrel into the scene but I didn’t think of it until it was too late so I fussy cut him out. Once again I used my Prismacolor pencils for the coloring on this card. I stamped a background stamp from Impression Obsession aptly called Woodgrain directly on the kraft card base. I used another IO set called Gourdous for the small sentiment, which was die cut with a Creek Band Creations tag die. I added a tiny twine bow and of course the monthly prompt of sequins! I could have made another 3 cards for Halloween if I had started sooner, but I simply ran out of time. I did not come anywhere near close to running out of sequins… those things must multiply in the drawer! OK, as promised here is your hop list:

Mid Month Inspiration at JDS

Popping in with a reminder that the September Anything Goes challenge is still going on at Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenge and you have until Oct. 4th to enter for the chance to win images from the Jan’s Digi Stamps store! Today’s card features an accessory image from the Beach Friends set:

Cute, right? I love how Jan’s sets come with extra images that can either enhance the main image, or hold up on their own as the focal image! I enlarged the b/w version of the cocktails to fill an A2 card front, added the sentiment, and printed on bristol paper. I die cut the panel with a Pink and Main rounded rectangle die. The image is colored with Prismacolor pencils, smoothed with Gamsol, and then highlights were added with a white gel pen. I added jewels from Trinity Stamps for a finishing touch. I love how they reflect back the colors used in the coloring! Here is a close up:

September Challenge at JDS – DT Post

Its the first Monday of the month and that means there’s a new challenge at Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenge! There is the hint of fall in the air here in GA and it motivated me to use this gorgeous image from the Signs of Autumn set. The whole set is beautiful, but I wanted to showcase this one image. I love that Jan’s sets come with the images in both color and b/w, and with so many sentiments to choose from. Here is everything included in the set:

I enlarged the image to take up most of an A2 card front and added a sentiment that I thought fit the rest of the space without looking crowded. The pre-colored version is pretty but I was dying to color this myself, so I broke out my Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol. Unlike the New England states, we don’t get a whole lot of the bright red leaves… some, but our fall leaves lean more yellow, orange, maroon and deep purple. I tried my best with my limited color mixing skills to depict the colors in my mind’s eye.

After coloring, I used Gamsol with paper stumps to smooth and blend the coloring. To ground the image, I added light coloring below the images, knowing that the Gamsol would not smooth the coloring out. Instead, I was shooting for the look of woodgrain without getting to fussy about trying to draw it. I’m not sure I achieved that, but I am content with the results. After coloring, I trimmed the panel down to be narrower than an A2 card. Now, here is where you are going to have to trust me! I swear the paper used for the card front behind the image is the exact same purple as the leaves, but no matter what I did, it appears black in photos. The gems are an olive green to match the green leaves but again, they appear black in the photos. So frustrating!!! I recently changed the light bulbs in my craft room and the new daylight bulbs make crafting so much easier as I can see true colors and everything looks sharper… except the photos!!! I’ll keep playing with the settings on my camera and try adding more lights to the room. In the meantime, imagine a perfectly coordinated color combo! 😉

September 2CCC DT Post with Stamp On It

Can you believe its September already? I can’t. But there is the barest hint of Fall in the air here in Georgia in the evenings. Before long, Christmas will be sneaking up on us! I’m getting a jump on it though, with this fun Christmas card! Our September sponsor of 2 Crafty Critter Crazies Challenge is Stamp On It, who carries several brands of stamps under their umbrella, including QKR Stampede and Eureka! Stamps. I’m using an adorable Eureka! Stamps image called Holly Doggies and the current sketch (rotated) from Sunday Stamps to make this card. Here is the sketch:

First I selected a patterned paper from an old Doodlebug paper pad. I thought the paw prints in Christmas colors was perfect. I printed my image on Bristol paper and colored it with Prismacolor pencils to coordinate with the paper. It was fun figuring out what colors to use for each dog breed, and I managed to represent my 2 dogs in the image… a yellow lab named Wally and a black Lab/Border Collie mix named Willow who is full of personality! I used a sentiment from the My Favorite Things Happy Pawlidays set, which I cut into a banner. A few adhesive rhinestones and this card was done! Looking at it now though, I need to go back and add Nuvo Glaze or Glossy accents to the berries and doggie noses!!! At least you’re getting to see if before I mess it up and accidentally smear it! 😂 Isn’t it always the final touch that ruins the card?!? Tell me its not just me… 😏

I had the hardest time getting a good photo of this card with the rainy weather we’ve been having this week. This closeup shows the colors a bit more accurately:

Same Set Syndrome August Hop with Create and Inkspire!

This month, we are showcasing Create and Inkspire, the newest company on the block, owned by Courtney Kreeber. In addition to an online publication, Create and Inkspire offers a monthly themed card kit, and I’ll be using the July kit along this hop. If you are a follower of mine, you know I’ve been getting crazy crafty with the debut kit for the last month. Until this card, I had used everything else in the kit at least once except the cloud and grass stencil so I was eager to use that for today’s card! I used makeup brushes and Distress Oxide inks to create a simple and soft background for my floral scene. Once the inks were dry enough to handle, I die cut the panel with a Pink & Main stitched rounded rectangle die. I stamped multiple floral images and watercolored them with Tombow markers, my go-to medium for flowers as it provides me the most control without getting too fussy. Speaking of fussy, I fussy cut the images out which is very simple to do with these images. I popped them all up on foam tape, adding a 2nd layer to the middle flower, and placed them on the panel. The kit comes with a 3×4 stamp set of just sentiments, which I love. I cut my sentiment at an angle for interest. I used a Spectrum Noir clear glitter pen to add some shimmer to the flowers. Here is a couple close ups:

Collected Crafty Collabs August Hop!!!

It is my absolute favorite time of the month, the day I get to hop along with my sweet Squirrel Sisters and our scurry of fellow crafty squirrels! Why squirrels you ask? Because we all have a crafty stash stored up and tucked away just like a squirrel and it’s acorn stash! We want to pull out those precious supplies and enjoy actually using them instead of feeling guilty because we bought them and squirreled them away!

This month the theme is Summer/Vacation and/or Embossing Folders. You can use either or both as the inspiration for your card! Fun, right? The hop officially started with my sweet Squirrel Sister V this month. You probably arrived here from the talented and beautiful Katy Ingram of Eastwick Paper and Ink. And after me your NEXT STOP is the super sweet and uber amazing Charlotte Ehrukainen, aka Lady Joyful! I’ll be sure to link to her again at the bottom of the post. 😊 First, let’s take a look at my cards for the theme! First up, Vacation!

My family goes camping for our vacations, so imagine my excitement when I found a camping set with SQUIRRELS! I *had* to use it!!! This set is called S’more Friend by LDRS Creative, and the squirrels are beyond cute in and of themselves! The fact that there are 4 squirrels… one for each of us Squirrel Sisters that admin this hop group, is perfection! (In case you are wondering, I figure V is the one playing guitar, Marie and I are dancing and being silly, and Anna is sitting and laughing at us all!!!) I went very dark with this colors on this card hoping to portray a night scene around the campfire. The images were colored with Prismacolor pencils and fussy cut. I used dies from Creek Bank Creations called Land and Grass Edge to make my hills. I didn’t have the shade of green paper I wanted so the bottom hill is inked with Distress Oxide Pine Needles. The 2nd hill and sky are cardstock. The bright yellow stars are from a Momenta die aptly called Star Confetti and I added some translucent yellow star sequins for a little shimmer. The sentiment from the set was die cut with a Simon Says Stamp stitched circle die. No embossing folder (trust me, I *tried*, really… but this is still fun, right? Here’s the closeup:

Next up are my Summer & Tropical cards… yeah, I know… but I couldn’t decide between all of my ideas! (And my Squirrel Sister V would tell you that I am a “Maximizer”… someone who among other things has to consider every option, even if the first idea is the best.) I’m also an overachiever when it comes to crafting, so you get three cards for the cost of one hop stop! Now, where was I? Oh, summer!

For this next card, I used Jane’s Doodles Tropical Fun set. I randomly stamped the foliage and hibiscus flower, then watercolored them with Tombow markers and once dry die cut with a Simon Says Stamp stitched rectangle die. For the embossing folder background, I used a folder called Tropical Border by Park Lane. I applied green ink on the folder on the raised area and ran it through with green paper, which letterpressed a darker green into the recessed areas of the paper. It took me a couple tries to get it right, and I’m a little said that most of it got covered up! I popped the stamped panel on top with foam tape, added a few clear sparkling sequins from Pretty Pink Posh, and called it done! How about a glamour shot?

This last card was so easy to make! This also uses the Jane’s Doodles Tropical Fun set.

The flamingos and sentiment were stamped then die cut with a Simon Says Stamp stitched oval die. I watercolored the images and water with Tombow Markers. I love the bright pink and blue color combo! For the embossing background, I used a 5×7 double sided folder from Spellbinders called Elegance. I thought the flower petals looked like water splashes. I embossed blue paper but the color wasn’t quite right and it looked plain. I decided to hit the raised areas of the design with a Distress Oxide ink and that really brought out the pattern without taking over. Super simple! Time for the obligatory close up!

August Mid-Month Inspiration with Jan’s Digi Stamps

Taking a break from all the Create and Inkspire posts to bring you this fun summer card, courtesy of Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenge. Good news! Jan’s Digi Stamps is having a sale!!!

This card features Eunice and Gertrude, fun characters that star in several stamp sets by Jan. This set, called Beach Friends, has the twosome working on the Vitamin Sea at the beach and enjoying a couple cocktails! The set comes with the scene and 3 accessory images in b/w and pre-colored, as well as 4 sentiments! Check it out:

Now, the sentiments in the set are great, but I wanted to make my own. I use the Silhouette Studios software to work with my digis and to create my sentiments, even when I don’t use the Silhouette machine to cut anything. I create a rectangle to represent my card base, arrange my images and sentiment to fit within. The software can use all the fonts on my computer so I play around with the font styles and sizes, as well as line and character spacing until I’m happy, then I print. When I am organized, I usually design 4 cards at once and print on bristol paper, then I cut them apart for my card fronts. I chose to work with the black and white version to match patterned paper I picked out to use with it. I loved the muted rainbow tones of the paper and thought it was perfect for my beach scene. I colored the image with Prismacolor pencils and cut it down to a square focal. I used a kraft card base using Neenah Desert Storm (from my July Create and Inkspire kit). I layered up a band of yellow and turquoise cardstock bands onto the patterned paper, and popped up my focal image on fun foam. I have to admit, I tried every embellishment in my cardmaking stash and could not find something that looked right with this card. Then I broke into my old scrapbooking stash… low and behold, I found the perfect embellishment… a starfish brad from Eyelet Outlet! I did a little card surgery to get it in there, but I love the final touch it adds. Here is a close up of the card:

I have had a blast playing with the July kit and could keep going and going. This makes the 5th card I’ve made with the kit but I still have another 2 in the works and supplies from the kit I haven’t even shown you in use!!! So, let’s chat about today’s project!!! The July kit comes with 2 stamp sets, a 4×6 image set and a 3×4 sentiment set, shown here:

I have used all the floral images except the foliage in my previous cards, so you know I had to use it today!!! And I’m also using the final of 5 sentiments in the smaller set too and I finally cut into the Desert Storm cardstock in the kit as my card base. Using my Misti, I started by stamping the sentiment in the bottom right. Then I used the foliage image multiple times and in different orientations to cover the card base to make this a one layer card. Using is my Polychromos pencils I first colored all the images in white. While not necessary, I like to take the time to do this when I want my colors to remain true on colored cardstock. Without the white, the green shades would look darker and more muted. After a layer of white, I used my light green pencil to color all of the images, then I went back in with a darker green in the areas I wanted to add shading… basically anywhere I thought the leaves were folded or pinched. I didn’t sweat it out over a light source, just adding a variation of color to keep them from looking flat. That’s it! Super easy, yet it makes a big impact and can be used for anyone as I don’t think it leans feminine or masculine. Here’s a close up of the card:

Create and Inkspire July Kit – Take 4

Have you ordered your kit or stamps from Create and Inkspire yet? I hope so! Its also time for the August kit to come out, and I can’t wait! But, still so much I want to play with in this debut kit!!! Today I used a floral image and sentiment that I haven’t used yet. And yes, I still have lots of stuff I haven’t used yet! Ok, so this sweet poppy called to me when a friend requested red flowers. This was yet another chance to watercolor with my beloved Tombow markers, so I whipped up the coloring before I knew exactly what I would do with it. (Please tell me I’m not the only one crafting by the seat of my pants!) So what’s a crafter to do? Well, I pulled out the little (lie… it’s ginormous) baggie of premade backgrounds. You see, the blog name Misplaced Mojo comes honestly. I don’t always have the mojo to make cards. When I don’t, I try to play around with background techniques, stamp off new sets to save myself time later, fussy cut, or organize. This background was one of four made from gluing down cardstock strips to copy paper, ala Jennifer McGuire, to create am 8.5 x 11″ background which I then cut into four card fronts (and stuffed in the not so little baggie of backgrounds for just the perfect opportunity. The black inked lines, the gray centers, the bright red of the flowers… it was like I made it for this image, but I assure you I didn’t. Serendipity, my friends. Don’t fight serendipity when it chooses to bless you with a background. I die cut this one down with a Stitched Rectangle die from Simon Says Stamp and mounted it to a black card base. Here are the other three awaiting their serendipitous moment of card rapture:

Where was I? Oh, and speaking of serendipity… did you notice how today’s choice of sentiment fits perfectly across one of the strips of cardstock?!? I really wish I could claim this as premeditated genius, but I don’t think I’d fool anyone with that if I tried! As cool as the sentiment and background and flower looked together, it was missing that little something. I wanted the white to pop more than the darker shades so I added a trio of white epoxy dots, and a trio of white gel pen dots in the flowers centers. Done! Here is a close up:

That’s it for me today but this kit is still hanging out on the desk, and I’ve yet to have used one image, two sentiments, one stencil, the twine, the Nuvo shimmer paper, the kraft cardstock, and the Nuvo masking fluid! Plus, I only used a fraction of the other stencil and I haven’t even put a dent in the Trinity Stamps gems! This kit can stretch a long way, my friends! I have a plan for the kraft cardstock that (gasp) doesn’t involve Tombow markers! What?!? I know! Craziness, for sure… but hopefully beautiful craziness!!! I hope you aren’t getting tired of this kit yet, cause I’m not!

Create and Inkspire July Kit – Take 3

Do you save card elements you created for another card and then decided not to use? I sure do! Nothing gets thrown away around here unless I have exhausted all of its possible uses. Today’s background was one of several stenciled backgrounds I created a year ago for a CAS card design. It spoke to me today as I felt the stenciled patterned called Flower Petal Collage from Gina Marie Designs matched this floral in the set, which admittedly is my favorite stamp of the bunch from the July Create and Inkspire card kit! I also have a thing for blue flowers, so I naturally grabbed my Towbow markers, found a color that matched the Broken China Distress Oxide used on the stencil and went to work watercoloring this beautiful image! Once dry, I fussy cut the image and selected a sentiment from the kit that I had yet to use. Before stamping the sentiment in place, I quickly die cut the panel with a Rounded Rectangle Stitched die from Pink and Main and I thought the rounded corners accentuated the stencil design. I found some matching cardstock in my stash for the card panel, layered the stenciled piece over top, stamped my sentiment and popped up the image on foam tape. As CAS as this card is, the gems that came with the kit seemed overpowering and bulky. Instead I went with Sparkling Clear sequins from Pretty Pink Posh for that girly but subtle look. Here’s the close up:

I’ve already played with another image from the set, and have a fun background picked out for it, so I shall be back again before you know it with Take 4. As a reminder, this is the debut kit from Create and Inkspire, a new company founded by the amazing Courtney Kreeber. Create and Inkspire July Kit – Take 2

I still had the debut Create and Inkspire kit on my desk and I really wanted to play with more of the stamps. (If you are visiting me for the first time, you can learn more about the kit HERE and HERE.) Today I chose a couple of the floral images in the big stamp set to work with and yet another sentiment from the smaller set. As per my usual, I stamped them out onto Bristol paper and watercolored them with Tombow markers. I used two shades of yellow for the petals, two shades of brown for the flower centers, and a green for the stem and leaves. I set them aside to dry before fussy cutting them out. While playing with my floral arrangement, I decided I wished the stem on the single flower was longer to tuck behind the other two flowers. I simply stamped off the end of the stem again in my MISTI, colored it to match the others and fussy it cut it. Then I just glued it to the end of the original flower, knowing I could hide the seam behind the flowers on top.

I was excited to play with the shimmer powder that comes in the kit. I used the two pieces of watercolor paper that is included and did an experiment. I wet one and added the shimmer powder to it to see how the color would burst out across the water. For the second, I shook the powder onto the dry paper and then spritzed with water. To be honest, I’m not a mixed media girl and the uncontrollable results were not really my thing, though it is pretty how there are crystals of orange in an otherwise gold shimmer. I ended up brushing out the powder with a flat brush to get smooth all over color and let it air dry. For the other, I ended up adding more shimmer powder to my work surface, wetting it, and smooshing the paper into it for watercolor look. Once dry, I used the puddle on my desk to splatter drops on it for intense droplets of shimmer. I decided to add splatters to the brushed out version too, which is the one I chose for today’s card. Once dry, I die cut the piece with the second largest of the Spellbinders Curved Rectangle dies. I love how the Spellbinders dies emboss a border along the edge. Using the largest die in the set, I cut two pieces out of the white cardstock to make my own card base, channeling my sweet friend Marie Bingaman who makes adorable shaped cards frequently that I can’t help but drool over! If you haven’t checked out her blog or IG feed, you need to go do that now. I’ll wait here for you to get back!…… Didn’t I tell you she her stuff is adorable?!? IKR! *cough, cough* OK, back to this card…. I scored one piece a half inch from the end, folded it, applied liquid glue and matched it to the other piece the same size, making a card base without compromising the unique shape. From there I was able to layer the shimmer powder layer on top, then the flowers with the single floral glued flat to the card and the other image with two flowers popped up on foam tape concealing my extended stem. This card insisted it needed some of the Trinity Stamps gems included in the kit to further enhance the shimmer and shine. And here is a closer look at all that shimmery, blingy goodness!

See? You’d never know about my stem extension if I hadn’t told you! I already have a couple other ideas in the works, so if you thought I was going to be my typical squirrel brained crafter hopping to the next shiny thing, you’d be wrong… this time! Most of the time that would be exactly what I would do, but there is enough to choose from in this kit that I feel like my normal squirrel self anyway!!! Create and Inkspire July Kit – Take 1

I’ve had this kit for almost 2 weeks and because life gets in the way, I’m just now playing with it. And man, oh man…  I have 10 cards in my head that I can’t wait to get onto paper!!! I posted about this kit earlier with a full description of what comes in it, and you can find that post HERE. Today I’m using one of the stencils and both stamp sets. Just a reminder, in case you are not a kit kind of person, the stencils and stamps are sold separately too. Here’s a photo from my unboxing of all the goodies in the kit:

For those of you who have been here before, you know I love Tombow markers. What you may *not* know is that I have never used them to try no-line watercoloring… before now. For my first attempt, I am pretty dang pleased with the results. I am eager to try again with different inks to see which works best with the markers. Something *else* you may not know is that my first article for the Create and Inkspire magazine is all about watercoloring with Tombows and is a stepped out photo tutorial. You have to be a member to view the article, but for $3.99 a month, which also provides a discount on the monthly kit, you may want to go check it out and see if it is for you!!!

Ok, so let’s start with the image on today’s card… having never ventured into no-line coloring before, the only ink I had to work with is Barely Beige from Simon Says Stamp. I stamped the image twice with my MISTI so I could see it well, but honestly… with this ink, I think it would have turned out better with just one stamping.  I selected two markers adding the darker in the shadows and lighter on the tips of the petals. With a barely damp brush I liquefied the pigment and blended the colors. The pigments change the shade of the stamping to match the colors of the markers. I used another 2 shades for the stem and leaves. When dry, I die cut the image with a Spellbinders oval die. Using the die as a stencil, I used a makeup brush to apply Wild Honey Distress Oxide ink to the interior of the die cut around the image while leaving a white border. While there are many brands that carry shaped dies, Spellbinders is still the only ones I know of that have this feature.

The background was created with Wild Honey Distress Oxide ink and a makeup brush to obtain an ombre effect with the darker color to the left side of the panel, which matched the ink blending on the focal piece. Over that, I inked a single leaf from the foliage stencil of the July kit repeatedly down the left side with a combination of Spiced Marmalade and Abandoned Coral Distress Oxides to get a shade that matched my watercoloring. All that was left was to stamp a sentiment and the set that comes with the kit is going to get so much use!!!  I love the sentiments… so good for friend cards… and the font is beautiful! I stamped the sentiment twice in Abandoned Coral and once in Spiced Marmalade to get the perfect match to the stenciling and watercoloring. I love mixing colors to get what you need! I trimmed the panel down to allow a small white border and I added a scattering of the Trinity Stamps gems that come with the July kit. It is tempting to make this card in a rainbow assortment of colors, but I have too many other ideas for the rest of the kit that I want to try first! If you end up trying this layout, I’d love to see it!

Create and Inkspire Debut and Exciting News!

I’m super late to post on this (ugh, real life… *hanging my head in frustration*) but I didn’t want to allow it to pass without sharing!!! My sweet friend Courtney Kreeber has launched a new venture that I think you will be excited about! Her new company, Create and Inkspire debuted in June, with an online cardmaking magazine *and* in July also launched a monthly card kit! There is a small fee for the magazine ($3.99 per month or $19.99 for 6 months), but it provides you with a discount for the card kits that basically pays for the magazine membership. Unlike other monthly card kits, you currently do not need to sign up for months at a time. They go on sale the 15th of each month and it’s first come, first serve. The price for a kit is $35.99 for non-members and $32.39 for members. I wanted you to see all the goodies that come with the kit. The stamps are designed by Courtney herself! Exciting news!!!! I am beyond excited to share that I have been featured in the July magazine!!! I’m so eager for you to see the card and read the tutorial I wrote for the magazine. It was such an honor to be chosen and I hope to perhaps have another opportunity down the road to be published again!!! As with other publications, I cannot share my article on my blog for several months as it is exclusive to the magazine during this time. I urge you to consider the $3.99 membership to try out the subscription, read my tutorial, and consider if it is something you wish to continue with. My favorite thing about the Create and Inkspire magazine is that it features everyday crafters that you may not have heard of before. Clearly I am not “craft famous” and yet I had the wonderful opportunity to be published. While the names of the crafters featured may not be recognizable to you, I promise there is a immeasurable depth of talent being showcased, and you may just find your new favorite blogger, YouTuber or Instagram account!!! Stay tuned as I get inky and play with this kit! I plan on bringing you along with me as this is my very first kit *ever*, and I’m very curious to see how far I can stretch the supplies in it. I’ve thought about subscribing to other kits in the past, but I don’t typically care for all the paper and ephemera that comes in other kits or that you can’t pick and choose which sets you want.  It appealed to me that I could purchase a Create and Inkspire kit when I wanted without a commitment, and I can skip any month if I need to. If you have been on the fence about kits or think they are not for you, maybe my real life trial of this kit will be of interest to you! If not, she sells some of the kit pieces separately too, so if you have to have the stamp sets, you can get those without the full kit. Courtney has so much planned for the future of Create and Inkspire, but like any business venture, you start off small and keep adding to it. I’m so happy for her and I can’t wait to see where she takes this next!!! As for me, I should be back very soon with my first kit project!!!

Jan’s Digi Stamps August DT Post

What a year! Its August, and while that seems crazy, we all know the days this year have run together more than usual!!! Hard to believe, but its time to kick off another monthly challenge at Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenges, where its always a truly Anything Goes challenge! Cards, scrapbook pages, jewelry, sculpting, sewing, knitting, even baking… if you made it, you can enter it in the challenge. Be sure to follow the challenge to be eligible to win though! Speaking of winners, there are always 2 winners drawn… 1 from all the entries and a 2nd from the entries that use a Jan’s Digi Stamps image! So if you use a JDS image, you have 2 chances to win!!! For today’s challenge, I used a set Jan released last month called Wild Flower Blossoms and I couldn’t help myself… I ended up making a 4 card set with this set just to show you how versatile it is! First let’s talk about what you get with the set: 5 b/w images, 5 pre-colored images, 5 sentiments and a sentiment frame! Wow! Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself:

For my first card, I had to color up one of these images for myself as they are so beautiful!

Since I planned on making the card set, I opted to stick with a similar color combo. I printed the image larger than usual, along with the sentiment, on the same panel which I die cut with a stitched die.  I used Tombow markers to watercolor the images, adding some white gel pen details to the flower centers. I added iridescent gems that coordinated so pretty and affixed the card focal to pretty dot embossed paper from BoBunny.

For the remaining 3 cards, I kept the paper and stitched die detail the same, but changes up my embellishments, hopefully showing how versatile this set can be. My 2nd card uses the pre-colored image of 3 blossoms and a sentiment from the set. This card is embellished with Pale Periwinkle Nuvo Jewel Drops. I love how translucent and glossy they are!

My 3rd card uses the pre-colored single blossom, another sentiment from the set, and clear sparkling sequins from Pretty Pink Posh for an super CAS look. I also added clear shimmer pen detail to the flower center for added sparkle.

My 4th and final card uses the pre-colored vase image, yet another sentiment from the set, and this one uses iridescent rhinestones as the embellishment.

I was truly inspired by this set, and I know you will be too! I’m hoping Jan does more floral sets as they are so much fun to color, and she always provides such beautiful pre-colored images for when you don’t have the time or mojo to color it yourself. Summer Lovin’ IG Hop!

I wanted to pop in here today to share that I’m part of a fun hop over on Instagram with a bunch of friends from the Facebook group Handmade Happiness. Oh, and did I mention that you could win prizes like a $25 gift card from Simon Says Stamp??? This hop was organized by my good friend Mel Sanz of @in_a_craftymood and she’s the one giving away the SSS $25 gift card. Two other stops along the hop have individual prizes as well. The hop theme is Summer which can mean so many things to so many people! I had so many ideas I had the hardest time narrowing it down to one! However, I’ve had quite the crazy week or so, and to be honest I was feeling like I could use an adult beverage, which made me remember this retired set from Impression Obsession called Party Drinks and I just knew I had to use it! Take note on the way the sentiments come pre-curved as that will come up again later.

Fun, right? I started off by stamping ALL the images, cause they are just awesome, and colored them with Tombow markers, my current favorite coloring medium. I will admit that I did a little image searching to try to find appropriate colors for my drinks that matched the glassware, as I have a dear friend that is a expert in all things regarding alcoholic beverages. No, you stop right there… she’s not an alcoholic!!! LOL! Come now, this is my friend Virginia (V for short) of PassionsandDistractions who we are talking about! She loves to know the history of the different types of alcohols and fun cocktail recipes.  V writes an AWESOME series called Mix It Mondays that is highly entertaining even if you don’t like to drink!!! You should go check it out HERE! Not only is she an adept drink mixologist, she’s a wonderful cardmaker too, and also one of the sweetest and funniest people on the planet! OK… I’ll set my girl crush to the side and get back to the card!!! After coloring the images, I added Spectrum Noir Sparkle pen, white gel pen, and lots of Nuvo Crystal Glaze! Check out the shine!!!

The background was a quick and easy ink blending with makeup brushes with Broken China, Mermaid Lagoon, Antique Linen, and Gathered Twigs Distress Oxides. I freely admit I struggled a bit with the sentiment because it comes curved but after trying multiple things, I settled on straightening out the sentiment to the best of my abilities and stamping it. I had a banner die it fit perfectly, but then the banner wouldn’t fit on the card. *sigh* Oh well! The card came together easily from there with just popping the images in two thicknesses of foam tape for uber dimension! I attached the whole panel to a kraft card base. I had a few extra images than would fit on the front so I used them to decorate the inside! Check it out:

Welcome back, crafty friends and fellow critter crazies! Today I am sharing my project for the August challenge at 2 Crafty Critter Crazies where Sheepski Designs is the sponsor for the month! I was provided with this adorable skunk image aptly called Lil Skunk to play with. The image came in b/w only, so I opted to watercolor with Tombow markers. I came up with several computer generated sentiments with a fun puns to go with it, so I ended up making 3 cards! Super quick and simple coloring and some epoxy dots to finish them off! Same Set Syndrome Hop with Not2Shabby

Welcome to the July hop for Same Set Syndrome, where we hi-light a small stamp company each month, showcase some of their great sets, and then have a giveaway! Today, I am using a fun Not2Shabby set called Summer Time Buddies to make this scene card.

I started off heat embossing all the images, fussy cutting them out, and watercoloring them with Tombow markers. If you follow me, you know I have a slight obsession with my Tombows! To create this little beach scene, I tore kraft paper to create the beach and I used a dye ink pad to color a sheet of vellum for the water. I hand cut a piece of coordinating paper for a beach towel. I used a background stamp from Impression Obsession called Spatter to add subtle texture to the sand. I used white texture paste to add a little sea foam to the edge of the water and sand. For finishing touches I added white gel pen details to the images, black Glaze pen to the critters’ noses, clear Spectrum Noir pen to add sparkle to the sand and the some of the images, and foam tape to pop them up for added dimension. Scene cards are always a little more effort, but so worth it! Here’s a close up:

Collected Crafty Collabs July Hop!

My sweet little hop group I started is at it again! Last month I was so stinkin’ proud and amazed at what these folks can do when you give them a simple prompt!  Each month is a combination of theme and recommended supply that we’ve squirreled away and needs some love. If you remember last month was Critters and/or Stencils. If you missed it, this link will take you to my post and the full hop lineup. Today, you should have arrived here from the mega talented Lounon Riviere, and the next stop will be the amazing Donna Perisic. Don’t worry, I’ll put her link below too so you can continue to hop along!  This month is Outdoors theme and/or Patterned Paper, and I’m so excited to see what my Squirrel Sisters and our scurry of skilled squirrels have made! Do you like my slimline critter scene? I had so much fun paper piecing and thinking how to incorporate patterned paper into my scene! The grass paper for the… well, *grass*, and the cloud paper for the sky are both from Doodlebug who makes the cutest paper ever. Since the paper was 6×6 and the slimline card is 8″ long I had to get creative with piecing it together. I think I did a decent job of hiding the seams. The red/white gingham paper was a scrap in my stash. The images and sentiment are from 2 MFT sets, Scene Builder for the horizon line, trees and clouds, and Picnic Pals for the critters and accessories. I was tempted to paper piece the critters too, but decided against it when I couldn’t find paper to work. Instead, I watercolored the images with Tombow markers. For finishing touches, I popped up the sentiment and some of the images for dimension, added black Glaze pen to the critters eyes and noses, and used a Spectrum Noir clear sparkle pen (my favorite was of embellishing) on the clouds and watermelon.

Keep on Rocking – Mid-Month Reminder for JDS Challenge

20200714_225848[1]We’re half way through July, so the DT Divas of Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenge are posting projects today to remind you to enter the challenge before the end of the month! The challenge theme is always Anything Goes, and we mean ANYTHING. All crafts are welcome… papercrafts, sewing, knitting, mixed media, home decor, baking, cooking… if you made it, you can enter it! Just make sure you follow the Jan’s Digi Stamps Challenge site to be eligible to win!

For my project today I’m using a brand new set available from Jan’s Digi Stamps called Malt Shop. Isn’t this set so much fun??? I chose to use the cool retro jukebox for my focal and I had to use the b/w version because I was dying to color it up myself! Its been forever since I used my alcohol markers and at the request of a crafty friend I dug them out to test my printer ink as she was looking to buy the same model. I was pleased to not have any smudging from the Promarkers, but man am I out of practice using them. Not only that, I had forgotten to use appropriate paper, so this was colored on Bristol which tended to bleed the marker color a little. It was fun to shade though, and I’d like to dedicate some time to playing with them again soon before I forget again how to use them! After the image was colored, I used a rounded rectangle frame die to cut it out and mounted it on fun foam to pop it up. For the card front, I embossed matching green cardstock with an embossing folder from Park Lane called Diamond. Now, I didn’t have a current use for the sentiments in the set so I ended up using a sentiment stamp from my stash to send to someone who needs a little encouragement. I left the inside blank this time so I could have more room to write a personal message. For embellishment, I added tiny music notes from another stamp set in my stash. Here’s a better look at the embossed background and the coloring:
